Kids Stuff

Most of us didn’t begin our yoga journeys until we were already fully developed as adults, doing so to recover from an injury, stay in shape after retiring from a sport, find a sustainable hobby, clear our heads, or meet likeminded people. Whatever our reason for starting, it didn’t take us long to discover the mental and physical benefits of the practice and, as a result, ask ourselves why we didn’t begin practicing earlier.

The benefits of yoga are powerful predictors of wellbeing and longevity. At Yoga Odyssey, we believe that exposing the youngest generation to the practice can help guide them toward a life of mindfulness within their thoughts and strength within their bodies. In particular, yoga programs centered around teaching children have been noted as highly effective in improving their emotional regulation, memory, ability to focus, and sleep quality. In the critical periods of growth and development, yoga has been shown to optimize spine health, flexibility, balance, strength and endurance.

For this reason, YO is eager to bring yoga for kids to the studio. In our program, children will be encouraged to work toward their goals, manage their stress, and support each other in a positive, accepting, and safe environment. They will be guided through foundational postures and movements such as downward facing dog, child’s pose, tree pose, and the warrior postures. In addition to physical movements, they will work through mantras including, “I am kind” and “I am strong” to promote self-compassion and a thorough internal awareness.

Our program will offer controlled fun and silliness just as much as it does reflective stillness and breathing. It will teach the importance of relaxation and both physical and mental stability. Through these features and so many others, we hope to play even a small role in setting our YO kids on a developmental path toward a life filled with health and wellness.
